India is the largest exporter of handmade carpets in the world, and most of what reaches European and North American showrooms is woven in a handful of clusters: hand-knotted rugs around Bhadohi and Mirzapur, hand-tufted production in Panipat, fine silk work in Kashmir and Agra, and flatweaves across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. What to check before you order

• Construction. Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot and last for decades; hand-tufted rugs are punched into a backing and glued, which is far cheaper but has a shorter life. Both are legitimate — they are not interchangeable, and the price gap between them is not a discount.
• Knot density. Quoted as KPSI (knots per square inch). Higher density allows finer detail, but a coarse tribal design at 60 KPSI is not inferior to a fine floral at 300 — density should match the design, not simply be maximised.
• Material. Ask whether "silk" means real silk or viscose, sometimes sold as "art silk" or "bamboo silk". Viscose looks similar when new and wears very differently.
• The back. The reverse of a rug tells you more than the front. Ask for a close-up of it before committing to volume, and order a sample.
