Real silk versus "art silk"
Terms like art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk and faux silk all describe viscose — a regenerated cellulose fibre, not silk. Viscose is markedly less durable, yellows with age and is damaged by water, which makes it a poor choice for floor use in most settings. In photographs high-sheen viscose looks very like real mulberry silk, so no image can settle the question. A burn test or microscopy can. Any seller quoting a silk price should be willing to support a sample test.
Where silk makes sense
Silk suits low-traffic settings where the rug is close to a decorative object: bedrooms, formal reception rooms, wall hangings and display pieces. For high-traffic areas a wool-silk blend is usually the better commercial decision, giving some of the sheen and detail with far more of wool's resilience.
